While we typically think of Boppy pillows being used for nursing and bottle feeding, they are fantastic baby loungers that will get plenty of use.

Whenever you place your little one in a Boppy newborn lounger or pillow, you should monitor your infant to ensure he is awake.

Generally, the Boppy newborn pillow and Boppy lounger is a safe place to place your little one while he is awake as it allows him to see the world from a slightly higher position rather than lying flat.

Whether you opt for the Boppy pillow or Boppy lounger, they both have multiple uses that you’ll learn about in this article.

Before we get right into the uses, let’s first understand what Boppy pillow and Boppy lounger are and their slight difference.

What is a Boppy Pillow?

Bopper Pillow

A Boppy pillow, known as the Boppy, is one of the more popular options in mommy groups. It is designed in a “C” shape to fit over a mother’s belly and provide maximum comfort while breastfeeding.

Designed to support breastfeeding moms or nursing babies, Boppy pillows are also helpful for other purposes.

Changing the Boppy covers to fit your child’s style can be done using organic or conventional covers. The waterproof covers are also available.

If you use the Boppy pillow for sitting, your baby will need to have head control before using it for them. From 2 – 3 months old, a baby can use a Boppy pillow for tummy time.

For better shape retention, Boppy suggests drying it with tennis balls after washing.

In addition to gently cradling babies during supervised awake time, the Newborn Lounger is lightweight and has a simple carry handle that makes taking it from room to room much easier.

Starting with a baby lounger is a great idea since it offers recessed interiors that provide a perfect cradle for your baby.

While watching the baby and getting things done, the Boppy Newborn Lounger provides various views and environments to stimulate the baby’s curiosity.

The baby can be right next to whatever you are doing – brush your hair, cook a meal, work out, do housework, etc. In addition, it’s a great place for babies and siblings to get to know each other.

Because of its lightweight design, you can quickly bring it with you to your family and friends’ houses, so you know your baby will be able to relax during awake times while visiting.

What is the difference between Boppy Pillow and Boppy Lounger?

There is not much difference between the Boppy Pillow and the Boppy lounger as they perform the same function.

The significant difference is the Boppy pillow C-curve design.

The Boppy pillow offers better support while nursing or bottle-feeding because you can wrap the C-section around you, which holds better than the Boppy lounger.  Also, the baby pillow gives better front and back sitting support.

Conversely, the Boppy lounger is best when you want to lay your baby fully on his back (while awake).

In my opinion, the modern lounger (with shallow hollow) is better for tummy time. Instead of laying your little child on the hard floor or mat, this is a better alternative.

Although the Boppy pillow and Boppy lounger are individually better in specific ways, you can use any of them to perform the same function.

Why You Need a Boppy Pillow

As a mother, you may notice that you suffer from back, neck, and shoulder pain while nursing your baby.

While you are tired, it’s challenging to maintain a proper posture, and when you spend hours each day breastfeeding, it’s easy to fall into the habit of being sluggish.

Usually, women buy a Boppy Pillow to use as a positioning pillow while nursing. However, a Boppy Pillow can serve other purposes as well, including tummy time for the baby.

The Boppy infant pillow allows you to raise your baby higher so that they can breastfeed closer to you.

As a result, you don’t have to slouch to breastfeed.

How to Use a Boppy Pillow Lounger?

The other Boppy pillow and Boppy lounger use extend beyond nursing, and you can continue to use it after you’ve finished nursing.

1. Breastfeeding

bopper pillow for breastfeeding

With a Boppy pillow, you can use various breastfeeding positions. I preferred the cradle hold when my baby was a newborn, and the nursing pillow provided a good way to get the baby up to my breasts to nurse.

To use the Boppy to nurse the baby in the football hold position, take a comfortable sitting position that supports your back. Bring your Boppy pillow to your sides or on your lap, around your hips/waist to support your infant.

Place your little one on the Boppy pillow or lounger, allowing him to face your body while resting on his side.

Ensure that your infant’s mouth is at the same level as the breast you plan to feed them from.

Keep your torso and breasts upright. If your little one isn’t elevated enough, an option is to add another pillow beneath the Boppy.  If necessary, you can rest your arm on the pillow as you cradle or lift the infant’s head and upper torso.

2. Bottle Feeding

While bottle feeding, you can use the Boppy pillow in several different ways. But I’ll mention the two typical methods.

Paced feeding:

If you plan on switching between bottle-feeding and breastfeeding, paced feeding practice is crucial.

Through pacing feeding, the baby experiences the same milk flow as it would if they were nursing. As a result, no nipple confusion occurs, and the baby cannot refuse to breastfeed after being introduced to bottle-feeding. Also, this practice will help to reduce spit-up, colic, and overfeeding.

Before practicing paced feeding, lift your infant’s head at a 45 degrees angle, and the Boppy makes the job easier, taking away the stress from your arms.

Support:

Caring for a newborn that is unsettled and fragile can be frightening. Boppy’s pillow provides the extra support you need for you to bottle feed safely while your baby is on it. While bottle feeding, a Boppy can assist in relieving stress from your muscles.

3. Supported Back Sitting Position

back sitting position

You can also use the Boppy lounger or pillow to support your baby while in a sitting position. This pillow will aid in perfecting their sitting coordination and skills. Babies usually start learning to sit between four to eight months.

So to support back sitting, wrap the Boppy pillow behind your baby’s butt or back while sitting upright to offer them extra comfort and cushion should they fall. Your baby’s legs should face outwards towards the pillow opening. To help them maintain that position for a while, you can keep toys on the floor to keep them engaged.

4. Supported Sitting from the Front

Like the supported back sitting, position your infant in the Boppy pillow C-shaped opening, ensuring his tummy rests against the curved shape, and his arms drape over it. You can surround him with additional pillows in case they rollover. As a result, they develop the core and lateral strength necessary for sitting.

5. Tummy Time

Boppy lounger tummy time

Your baby can begin tummy time once his umbilical cord has dropped and dried.

Usually, tummy time practice involves turning your baby upside down and laying them on their belly. Tummy time develops your baby’s head control and strengthens their core muscles.

When you start tummy time, set a short time limit and increase the time whenever your child shows an interest.

On the other hand, if your kiddo hates and resists tummy time, you can try placing them on a Boppy pillow at short intervals. They should get used to the new position over time.

Spread a blanket or baby mat on the floor, and place the Boppy pillow at its center. Position your little one across the C-shaped pillow opening with his belly against the curvy front portion. In addition, place some toys or a book in this position to grab their attention.

6. Sitting and Back Support

In one of the uses above, I mentioned using the Boppy pillow or Boppy lounger to support your infant’s back while sitting.

In addition, moms and even dads can use the Boppy to support their back while sitting and a neck pillow. This pillow can help to prevent body pains in these regions.

7. Propped Playing

The first few months of a baby’s life are spent exploring their world and learning about their surroundings, but they lack the gross motor coordination needed to pick up toys and lift their heads. The Boppy pillows have the dual function of letting babies get closer to toys above them while providing an opportunity to develop their motor skills.

8. Baby Snuggles

While newborns love snuggling close, managing a baby’s weight for long periods can be challenging.  Supporting a baby’s butt with a Boppy pillow can help so much in keeping both the baby and baby snuggler comfortable and cozy. So snuggle your baby with love using a Boppy pillow or Boppy lounger.

9. Postpartum Butt Pillow

After delivery, many moms use their Boppy pillow as a butt cushion or have a spare for this purpose.

When you give birth, whether naturally or with an epidural, your genitals can suffer soreness, and if you have a tear or require stitches, you are at an even greater disadvantage.

While your genitals are healing, the Boppy pillow can relieve pressure by sitting on the hole.

However, I’d recommend you to use the pillow on a softer surface, like the couch or bed, rather than on a hard surface due to the height difference.

10. Pregnancy Pillow

It’s nice to have a pregnancy pillow, but many prefer products that serve more than one purpose.

Using a Boppy is much like using a pregnancy pillow. For better sleep, place them between your legs and beneath your belly. If you suffer from sciatica or backache during pregnancy, this will help you reduce your discomfort in bed.

11. Congestion

Sometimes, your baby could catch a cold or have congestion.

Using the Boppy pillow, you can make her lie in an upright posture to ease the congestion.

12. Acid Reflux

Acid reflux can lead to spit-up in infants, caused by an immature muscular valve (lower esophageal sphincter) between the infant’s stomach and esophagus. This condition allows the food to pass through the throat, causing spit-up. Keeping her upright on a bouncer or Boppy pillow will calm the situation.

13. Sibling Support

The Boppy pillow helps siblings more securely hold a baby while providing them with the ability to look at each other. Of course, they still have to do this under your watch and with your assistance.

My daughter always has sibling moments with her little brother while he’s on the Boppy lounger, mostly in our sitting room. It even gives me a bit of time to do some other things around the house while keeping an eye on them.

14. For Visitors

Have you had visitors who would rather view your baby from a distance or touch them only while they lie down?

They are probably scared of holding your tiny, fragile newborn. The Boppy pillow can help to ease the anxiety and fear of directly holding a baby.

While they sit, you can place the Boppy on their laps and lay your baby in it.

15. Travel Chair

When I was still nursing my youngest child, this Boppy nursing pillow was my best friend.

I used the travel pillow partly because I was nursing and partly because it allowed me to have my baby sit or lie down next to me instead of carrying multiple items.

16. Exercise Support

Most of the floors are hardwood throughout my house, so I often find that using just the floor or an exercise mat is too uncomfortable to perform back exercises.

In order to perform leg lifts, reverse sit-ups, etc., I place the Boppy beneath my hips so that there is not much pressure and I can complete the exercise smoothly.

17. For Pets

Having the same pillow for my pet and my kid won’t be feasible, but you can pass the pillow on to your pets once your toddlers are grown up. Just throw a blanket on it and let them enjoy it.

18. Gadget Holder

While making a video call alone or with your children, you can position your tablet, notepad or phone against the Boppy pillow. Then hold your baby while sitting upright.

19. Writing/Reading Support

My living room is often where I do most of my brainstorming and writing, mainly because I also want to monitor my children. On the days when I might have the strength to bring my chair and desk to the sitting room, I either sit on the floor or couch.

Then I’ll wrap my waist with the Boppy pillow or place the Boppy lounger on my lap to support my arm and prevent me from slouching. Alternatively, I can place the Boppy underneath my legs while lying down on the couch. Use these ways to do reading or writing easy for me.

20. Laptop Support

Similar to writing support, there are times when you might not stay close to your workstation or desk at home – you can place your laptop on top of the Boppy lounger to prevent you from slouching. As a result, it will reduce your chances of having backaches as the pillow will raise the laptop higher than its level.

In a Nutshell

The Boppy Pillow is designed to provide comfort during nursing, feeding, or propping among the many pillows available today. Moreover, other cushions may slip, and that can lead to discomfort.

Mothers choose the Boppy Pillow because it has so many uses, and there is only one required for all of them. They can also use it during pregnancy and after birth.

Despite the many other uses for the Boppy pillow, it isn’t designed to be a safe place for babies to sleep. As stated on the manufacturer’s website, you must not allow your baby to sleep on the Boppy.

The Boppy poses a serious risk to babies. Unsupervised infants and babies can easily curl up and suffocate on pillows or when left unsupervised. You should use the Boppy pillow only when your baby is alert, active, and under adult supervision.
