Best Bottles for Breastfed Babies

Best Bottles for Breastfed Babies 2022

It is not uncommon for mothers to search for the best bottles for breastfed babies.

Thumbs up to you, mama, for deciding to breastfeed and being a good mother! You’re here because you’re trying to find the best baby bottles for your little one. Let me tell you: your search ends here.

Whether you’re a working mom or simply don’t have anyone else to help you with the baby, getting your infant to drink from a bottle can be tricky.

If you are trying to find the right nipple flow that replicates breast milk or getting your baby accustomed to drinking from a bottle without gagging on it, introducing an infant to a bottle can be difficult.

In addition, babies who are breastfed are sometimes given a bottle too soon, which leads to breastfeeding problems later on.

Bottles are typically given when a mother goes back to work or wants to take a break from breastfeeding in general.

However, introducing bottles at the wrong time can cause breastfeeding problems such as nipple confusion and make your baby too dependent on having the bottle in place of real milk from you.

Understanding the Feeding Bottles for Breastfed Babies

Breastfeeding is the most natural form of feeding your newborn baby. However, some challenges may arise when breastfeeding.

There are just times when breastfeeding just cannot be done. Perhaps you need to go back to work, go on a trip, or just get some well-deserved rest.

Whatever the reason is, sometimes bottle feeding is necessary. Breastfed baby bottles serve as your extension to your baby.

These bottles help babies who have birth defects that prevent them from sucking or physically having the strength needed for proper feeding.

In addition to medical reasons, baby bottles can be important for bonding with babies. For some families, it’s a part of their parenting philosophy.

The best baby bottles are going to be the ones you and your baby are comfortable using, with no problems.

As such, the best bottles for breastfed babies need to be durable and easy to clean so that you can spend more time with your growing infant.

However, not all breastfed bottles are durable and easy to maintain. This is why it’s important to consider the type of breastfed bottle you and your baby need. To this, we now turn.

Types of Breastfed Baby Bottles

The type of breastfed bottle you choose can make the difference between your baby’s satisfaction and lack of it.

Hence, when looking for the best bottles for breastfed babies, it’s important to consider their type and their compatibility with you and your baby.

Here’s a brief explanation of the major types of breastfed baby bottles you need to consider before making a buying decision:

  • These bottles are easy to maintain.
  • They don’t stain and warp.

Cons of Glass Bottles

  • They are expensive compared to other bottles.
  • They could be heavier for babies.

2. Plastic Bottles

Plastic bottles are bottles made of plastic. They are more lightweight in nature and low cost compared to other types of bottles.

Pros of Plastic Bottles

  • They are lightweight.
  • These bottles are less expensive compared to other bottles.

Cons of Plastic Bottles

  • They can easily break down with repeated heating.
  • The use of chemicals to harden plastic could be harmful to babies.

3. Silicone Bottles

Silicone bottles are bottles made of silicone that are durable, lightweight, and are chemical-free in nature.

Pros of Silicone Bottles

  • They are lightweight.
  • These bottles are chemical-free.
  • They are durable.

Cons of Silicone Bottles

  • They are expensive compared to other bottles.

When to Introduce a Bottle to a Breastfed Baby?

The best bottles for breastfed babies are great but don’t make the mistake of using them at the wrong time.

While there’s no generally recognized period of breastfeeding babies with bottles, most lactation consultants recommend starting when your baby is at least 3 to 6 weeks old.

According to a Brooklyn-based (New York) lactation consultant, Freda Rosenfeld, the best time to introduce bottles to full-term babies is around age 2 to 6 weeks. She warned, that if you start before you and your little one are “in a groove with breastfeeding,” the baby is likely to prefer the easier and faster flow from the bottle and reject the breast.

Again, there is no established day or week to introduce bottles to your baby, since some babies adjust to nursing more quickly than others. Dr. Neifert, a Denver-practicing pediatrician, advises that you start it once your infant is latching well, receiving full feeds at your breast and also gaining well.

On the flip side, you shouldn’t delay (beyond 6 weeks) introducing your infants to bottles as they may reject the bottle. The reason is that babies are prone to sucking on anything which is placed in their mouths at that time (4 to 6 weeks).

How to Introduce a Bottle to a Breastfed Baby

Buying the best bottles for breastfed babies will be counterproductive if you don’t know how well to use them. How you introduce your baby to a breastfed bottle is critical to achieving good results.

Here are the steps I follow when introducing my baby to a breastfeeding bottle:

1: Place the baby on a seat or my lap.

2: Be cheerful and patient as I put on a cheerful smile.

3: Tell the baby that we are about to drink‌ ‌together (Remember, babies understand your emotions).

4: I’ll suck a little on the bottle and make some funny noises.

5: I’ll then submit the bottle to the baby, helping him/her place it in their mouth.

6: I will start singing to create a cheerful scene as he/she drinks.

7: As soon as I notice the baby is becoming unhappy, I stop feeding immediately.

8: I will continue feeding when his/her mood changes until I notice satisfaction.

That’s it. I will keep repeating the process until my baby learns the skill of handling his/her breastfed bottle independently.

Note: For optimal results, you should always ensure that your baby is in a good mood before breastfeeding him/her with a breastfeeding bottle.

How to Choose the Best Bottle for Breastfed Babies?

Have you tried every bottle out there only to find that your baby is still unhappy with their feeding? If not, I have!

My son was born a month early and struggled to latch and breastfeed. As a result, he needed to be bottle-fed from birth. And while we had no problem finding bottles his mouth would fit around, my problem was that he wasn’t happy with any of them.

Once I realized what parameters my son was looking for in a bottle, finding one to get him happily drinking was as simple as knowing the features that mattered most.

Here are the features I consider when looking for the best bottle for breastfed babies:

  • Material
  • Size
  • Nipple Type
  • Quantity
  • Shape

1. Consider the Material

The material used to make breastfed baby bottles differs depending on the type of the bottle.

Whether a glass, plastic or stainless bottle, you should consider a bottle that will interact with the formula you use or milk that you may breastfeed your baby.

2. Determine the Bottle Size

It is important to note that the correct bottle size is essential to successful bottle breastfeeding.

Depending on your baby’s age and size, you may need to choose a breastfeed bottle in the following range:

  • Small Size: 4oz or 5oz
  • Medium Size: 8oz or 9oz
  • Large Size: 11oz

3. Consider the Nipple Type

The size of the holes in the nipple determines how fast or slow the milk comes out from breastfed bottles.

The following are the two stages that determine the flow of breastfeeding bottles nipples:

  • 1- One Nipple Flow: This flow is suitable for newborns and younger babies seeking a slow milk flow.
  • 2- Two Nipple Flow: This flow is suitable for older babies seeking a faster flow of milk.

As your baby ages, you will find that he/she needs to pass through the first stage of nipple flow to the second stage.

4. Consider How Many Bottles You Need

Before buying the best bottles for breastfed babies, it is important to consider how many bottles you need.

Determining the number of bottles you need depends largely on two factors: whether you intend to breastfeed and use bottles periodically or if you plan to use bottles exclusively.

Be sure to choose a product that matches your baby’s feeding schedule and frequency.

5. Determine the Shape

The shape of the baby bottle mimics the breast, making the baby feel like they are feeding directly from the breast.

Also, the shape of the bottle will determine how you hold and feed your baby.

Ensure that the nipple has a ventilation system so that there is not too much air to be swallowed by your baby when he/she‌ ‌is‌ feeding. Taking in the air can lead to gas, colic and spitting ‌up.

What Bottles are Best for Breastfed Babies?

There are many bottles for breastfed babies out there, making it difficult to make the best choice.

However, when it comes to the best bottles for breastfed babies out there, you don’t have to worry anymore. Here I categorized the best baby bottles into seven categories for a stress-free selection:

1. Best Baby Bottles for Preemies

Mimijumi Get Going Bottle Kit

Mimijumi Get Going Bottle Kit

Mimijumi Get Going Bottle Kit is an all-in-one breastfeed bottle that looks identical to a mother’s breast because it is coloured like flesh.

This bottle set should make your baby happy as it allows your baby to latch and control milk.

Despite being flesh-coloured, the large nipple is surprisingly boob-like and feels and looks real. If your baby sees it for the first time, they may do a double-take.

The nipple design and slow-flowing nipples help soothe colic-induced fussiness in babies. Because the necks are so wide, they’re easy to clean within seconds and don’t contain any BPA.

Pros

  • It’s an all-in-one feeding solution.
  • This bottle allows the baby to latch and control milk flow.
  • It is BPA, BPS, lead and phthalates-free.
  • Furthermore, it is easy to clean.

Cons

  • It occasionally leaks.
  • The bottle is expensive compared to other bottles.

After trying every bottle possible, a lactation consultant recommended this bottle. My 3mo old went from refusing all bottles while I worked my 12hr shift to taking 4 4oz bottles from my husband and with no fight. Now after working 12hrs I don’t be up all night nursing since he is starved (just every 3 hours 🤣). The price tag was worth every penny for me to no longer be stressed worrying about my bottle refusing breastfed baby when I have to work.” – Erin Senkbeil, 2018 (Amazon user)

2. Best  Baby Bottles for Easy Transition

Comotomo Natural Feel Baby Bottle

Comotomo Natural Feel Baby Bottle

Made in South Korea, Comoto Natural Feel Baby Bottle is a transition-friendly bottle made of non-toxic silicone material.

This breastfed baby bottle is designed to mimic natural breast and latch, which makes it one of my best bottles for breastfed babies.

Pros

  • It is designed to latch.
  • This bottle is easy to clean with a wide neck.
  • It is soft and squeezy for babies to use.
  • The bottle prevents colic and fuss.

Cons

  • This bottle is expensive compared to other baby bottles.
  • It has limited colour options (Green and Pink).

We have been using these bottles with our newborn for two months now and they are great bottles in almost every aspect. We love the ease of cleaning and that they are silicone. The one thing that prevents me from giving them 5 stars is the lids.

They are WAY too difficult to take off. I appreciate not having to worry about them falling off in a bag or something but the little grooves to squeeze on the lid just make it frustrating to use. Maybe a screw on lid or larger grooves to grip the lid would be better. Still great bottles overall, probably the best out there at the moment.” – The Road Abode, 2019 (Amazon)

4. Best Baby Bottle for Pumping Parents

Medela Breastmilk Bottle

Medela Breastmilk Bottle is an excellent breastfed bottle made of glass that is durable and easy to use.

I included Medela Breastmilk Bottle on my list of the best bottles for breastfed babies because of its low cost and unique features.

Pros

  • It is easy to use.
  • The bottle is durable.
  • It is low cost compared to other bottles.

Cons

  • It is a tricker to assemble due to several pieces of the bottle.
  • This bottle is difficult to clean.

In short, it never worked and both times we found ourselves coming back to the Medela bottles–and what do you know, both times, their gas gradually subsided anyway. I think we were comforting ourselves by trying whatever we could to help our little ones feel better, but in the end, we should have stuck with the Medela and saved money. Cons

  • It is difficult to read the bottle numbers.

The Kiinde system is awesome! Our baby girl spits up so much. I love that you can squeeze out all of the air and she can easily grab the bottle. We like the Kiinde nipples, however our baby can be kind of a “lazy” latcher so she will suck in a little bit of air with them. • It is available in various sizes.

These are great, durable, easy to clean but the only thing you have to know that I learned is the white ring the nipple sits into has a small divit in it and align the nipple vent with that and you won’t have leaks, if you heat up the milk in a warmer or use formula, after warming or cooling off unscrew the lid a little bit and gently tighten to reseal it. Other than that I would highly recommend.” – DaniRay, 2019 (Amazon)

Frequently Asked Questions on the Best Bottles for Breastfed Babies

How Do I Get My Breastfed Baby to Take a Bottle?

There are many ways you can follow to make your breastfed baby take a bottle. I have listed my favourite steps above.

Rather than shoving the bottle into the baby’s mouth, encourage your baby to latch instead.

Then you can put the nipple up to his/her nose, gradually stroke it down to his/her mouth, allowing him/her to lead the latching.

Do Babies Drink More from Bottle Than Breast?

Not in all cases. When served with the right breastfed bottles, some babies take more from the bottle than the breast.

However, fast flow nipples can also encourage babies to drink more from bottles than breasts, but you should always ensure that they enjoy doing so. If your baby is not enjoying taking much from bottles, use the slow flow nipple to moderate milk intake to your baby’s level.

Will Giving a Bottle Ruin Breastfeeding?

It depends. Some infants have little difficulty transitioning from bottle-feeding to breastfeeding. However, other babies do have difficulty and will begin to be fussy about the breast or perhaps refuse it entirely.
